September is National Hunger Action Month. Here at Butte CAA we deal with hungry families every day. Our North State Food Bank helps food-insecure families fill their cupboards with essential food items. In the wake of the Camp Fire the need for food and nutrition support in this region has increased, but we are up to the task, especially with the support of local community members like you.
According to the US Department of Agriculture, 37.2 million people in the US lived in food-insecure households in 2018. That's a staggering fact for one of the most prosperous nations in the world. There should be plenty to go around, but we need your support to make sure that everyone gets the nutrition they need.
US National Hunger Statistics
The US Department of Agriculture's definition of food insecure households states, "At times during the year, these households were uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources for food." Over 11% of US households met this definition in 2018. Although 11% may not sound like much, that translates to 37.2 million people, 6 million of which were children.
How the NSFB is Fighting Hunger
Through various programs our North State Food Bank serves an average of 45,000 hungry residents each month. We partner with great volunteers and food providers to serve a six-county region including Butte, Glenn, Colusa, Plumas, Sierra and Tehama counties.
- We have established relationships with growers, distributors and other community partners to collect the food our community needs.
- We are able to buy the food in bulk, making your dollars stretch further.
- We have partnerships in place for distributing the food.
- We have a location to store the food and the means to transport it.
- We have incredible volunteer labor pools who are super excited to distribute the food.
