As part of our community outreach, we bring the food to you! One of the more unique programs that the Community Action Agency runs is the Tailgate Food Giveaway. This program conducts seasonal produce giveaways in 15 different cities throughout the counties we serve. Tailgate events include other non-profit agency booths to provide education and assistance programs related to the produce, such as Cal Fresh, Public Health and Nutrition Education.
These events are made possible by the combined efforts of the Community Action Agency of Butte County, the California Emergency Foodlink of Sacramento, the generous companies and agencies that allow us to conduct these events on their property and the volunteers who help with distribution. The California Emergency Foodlink hauls the produce in large semi trucks to the designated locations. Upon arrival there are up to 20 community volunteers that help setup, and then distribute boxes.
The Tailgate program provides direct distribution to over 300 families per event.
In 2016, we served 3,385 families and distributed 212,904 pounds of produce!
The program operates from late Spring to early Fall
Open to any low-income resident in need of food.
Food will be distributed while supplies last, we cannot guarantee adequate supply.
Designed to help low income families, the event encourages recipients to self-certify their status.
Tailgate Season Kicks Off in Magalia - Friday, June 15th
We want to thank Jaki's Hilltop Café for hosting this event and benefiting their community. It's a lot to ask to take over the parking lot of a private business for several hours. We appreciate their support.
