CAA VITA Program 2018In coordination with Chico State and other community partners, Butte CAA helped 1,207 people file their 2017 taxes for FREE. That accounts for over 1 Million dollars in tax refunds coming back to Butte County residents. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, also known as VITA was founded in 1971 by Gary Iskowitz at California State University Northridge. Butte CAA has been a key partner since 2003 in the expansion of the VITA program in Butte County.

Every year the IRS ends up with Millions of dollars in unclaimed tax refunds. According to Forbes that amount reached one of it's highest points in 2014, when the IRS had an excess of 1.1 Billion dollars in unclaimed money for people that just never got around to filing their taxes. How did this happen? Why don't people file? There are several reasons: filing taxes can be complicated, professional help can be expensive, or people that don't make much money may think they have nothing to gain by filing. That's where the VITA program comes in.

For Butte County residents with household incomes below $54,000 this program provides free help to make sure your taxes are filed properly and on time. Trained volunteers make sure that you don't miss out on tax credits or leave any money on the table. Below are the highlights of the VITA program for 2018.

Praise for the VITA Program

Because of the free service, I got my taxes filed on time, I knew they were correct, and I got a great refund. Thank you so much.
THOMAS Q.

We have had our taxes prepared by volunteers at Durham, California several years in succession. We have felt our small tokens of thanks are inadequate and wish to recognize these tireless, talented tax specialists by passing along our appreciation to the CAA.
I know they do not want to be reimbursed in any way and would be embarrassed at the mention, but I am sure our sincere gratefulness is shared by the many who avail themselves of their cheerful services. Thank you for recognizing the Tax Preparation volunteers and for offering their services to us.

Tom and Cheryl, Biggs, CA

The heart and soul of VITA are the dedicated volunteers. Without their commitment and expertise the program would not exist.
